While messing about in my workshop I thought I'd disassemble my Automax pinpointer. What I am thinking is to remove the probe and make a two piece probe. The signal box in my pocket and the probe maybe on a 36" cord.

The probe has four wire leads to the circuit board and are very fine gauge wires. (see pic)

QUESTION:
Would extending the wire by 36" or so cause any problems with the probe signal? I'm not an electronics guy but am thinking of phone wire and maybe a coiled cable.

Physically it is no problem to modify it, just a question of operational success. Thanks in advance all you rocket scientists out there!

I did try the rewiring and it will work but I returned it to it's original state for a hunt tomorrow.

But I spliced a 12" section of 4 lead phone wire from the probe to the electronics. I am now thinking of making the probe removable with phone cord connectors so I can use it as-is or plug in a coiled phone cord to the probe & box and have a little neater probe.

I really like the 8" length of the Automax especially in a deep hole.
