I have read a few things in the past about Europeans and Asians being in Australia before Cook.
An Aboriginal elder speaks of Egyptians being here before the British

I believe the British know this but for certain reasons don't want it to be common knowledge.

I have also read something years ago about a translation from ancient text (I forget exactly) that calls Australia "the land of gold"

Could all the Egyptian gold have originated in Australia?

If another race discovered the gold here first, would that give them the rights to the gold in Aus? Probably not, but is something I have thought about.

Except that the gun in question is not Portuguese, and not 16th century in date.

DigginDownUnder - there is plenty of information on European contacts with Australia before the arrival of Captain Cook. Just google the words East India Ship Trial, Dutch East India ships Batavia, Vergulde Draek, Zuypdorp, or even better visit the Maritime Museum in Fremantle Western Australian Maritime Museum | Western Australian Museum.

IMHO, no! It should all belong to the Aborigine Natives who were there thousands of years before Europeans and others ever set foot in Australia.

Gday Mate ! You are quite correct on the early British removing and hiding artifacts. Captain James Cook had Spanish maps when he landed in Australia . Luís Vaz de Torres - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Ossy
