I've been told, "this looks like a variant of an Auspice Maria symbol" on a pendant I found last week. :icon_scratch:

My question is... does anyone have any knowledge of what this symbol might represent or is it just decorative?
Here's a link to the original post... http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/t...-house-hunt-pendant-28-dog-tag-16-cdn-lc.html

If you want to take a guess on when it dates from, that would be great too.

Thanks,
Dave

I'm not seeing initials. There is no distinctive overlap you typically see with Victorian/Edwardian intertwined initials. I looked at "A M" examples but I think the similarity is coincidental.

I'm thinking it's just a fashion pendent. Possibly a transition piece from art nouveau, with the feminine scroll design, to the geometric patterns of art deco. 1920 give or take a decade...

It cleaned up rather nicely. Any evidence of gilding?

Thank you so much for this information Matt.
When I found this piece it did have evidence of a silver wash on it, but most of it washed off when I cleaned it.

Based on the design, I had the same thought as you as far as the date goes, first quarter of the 20thc.

Thanks again for your help,
Dave

Dave, I have to agree with DCMatt. I examined several Auspice Maria symbols and can't quite convince myself yours is a variant. Unfortunately, I can't offer an alternative ID. Cool find either way and great job cleaning it up.

Thanks for your post buddy.
I don't think it has a religious significance either, it's probably just a fashion-related piece.
