Audio on Garrett 750

I have been reading this forum for a short while now and have found it to be very informative. This is the first time I have posted so I guess a short introduction is in order. My name is Keith and I live in East Texas near the small town of Henderson. I have had my Garrett 750 for almost a month now and I have used it quite a bit in that time. Have found several clad coins in local parks and school yards and even a couple of wheat pennies around an old church. There are several folks around that use metal detectors and even a local club that I will be joining after the first of the year. This time of year everyone is wrapped up with holiday stuff so I have not been able to meet and pick the brains of the locals. So, I have a question for the forum members.
When using my Garrett I have set the threshold so that I hear a low hum in the headphones when hunting. I have also set the bi-level tone function to on and of course the 750 has the bell tone that sounds on a coin target. My question is; I have not noticed the low hum heard in my headphones change in pitch or intensity when sweeping over a target. The bi-level tone will sound off with a low pitched tone on iron and a high pitched tone on alumimum and such, but as far as the hum I hear when no target is under the search coil, I have never heard it change. Do I need to even have the threshold turned up to the point that I can hear this low hum? (my hearing is still much better than my eyesight so if there were a change I believe I would not have any problem distinguishing it). I was just expecting to be hearing a change in tone as the coil was sweeping over a small or deep target and so far I can't say that I have realized that to be the case. Is the tone change that suttle tha I am just missing it?
Sorry for the long first post but wanted to try and make it detailed enough that someone could understand what I was asking.
Cheers,
Keith in East Texas

Sir I believe the threshold sound will change when the ground balance changes--the 750 I think has auto ground balance so once you set it it should stay the same unless you come into some extreme changes in ground minerials. I've not run a 750, but have a 2500 and I let the auto ground balance take care of things unless I'm going for gold than Garrett tells you it is best to manual balance the machine. I do not think that the 750 has manual balance. Could be wrong you might go to some Garrett forums and ask, they are very good at answering and helping out.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Scooter. I'll try checking out the Garrett forum.

Hello Keith...

Also you should know that to get that change on the normal sound for coins that above 8.5 on the coin type, so most times a penny will not show that bell tone! I have had a hard time learning that but with lot's of finding and searching you will soon find getting better to understanding those sounds (grin). Remember most times it takes at least 100 hours of using your detector for you to get yourself getting married and the long you use the better you will get happy (smile).

Morning TimeDog,

Thanks for the reply. Yes I have noticed that a penny will not bell tone on the Garrett 750, it just kind of growls at ya... I manged to pick up a clad quarter and a couple of pennies yesterday at an old church softball field. I guess it's not being used anymore since someone had already plowed the field and laid off rows for planting what looks to be watermellons in the spring. I was detecting around the old back stop and bleacher area when I found the coins. Today I'm gonna do some scouting around and see where else I can locate some areas to detect. Still learning and searching.....

Hi Keith,

I'm just right down the road from you in Jacksonville. I'm going to get an Metal Detector after I get my? income tax. I was looking at getting a Garrett 250 for starting out.? Or just getting a Whites Mxt and be done with it. Anyway can you tell me a little about the club there? I could drive there and maybe get some better ideas on what to get and start with.

Thx's
Michael

Hey Keith, I live over in Overton just down the road.? I hunt pretty often over in Kilgore and have found lots of clads, a few wheats, one mercury dime and a civil war bullet all in the same area over fairly close to the college there in Kilgore.? I will be trying to post some pics in the near future.? Have a digital camera just haven't tried to post yet. ;D
