ATTENTION Testers! If You've Compared Set GB with Adjustable - Please Comment

This post differs from the other one on ground balancing because this one will be for those who have actually TESTED a factory set ground balance detector against an adjustable machine (hopefully in a variety of soil types).

We're NOT interested in theory for this post.

In actual in-ground tests, have you found that the adjustable ground balance detector always has a substantial depth advantage over the set ground balance machine?

PLEASE, lets be honest in this and tell it like it is.

Have you ever read the field test section in the magazines? Very seldom do they find any old stuff. Mostly parks and school yard hunts. Also they are paid by the manufactors, what kind of answer do you expect from them? If my check depended on it, i know what i'd say. ;D

This is getting off topic here but-- I love how those company detector testers always seem to have these old easy to access sites where in an hour or so they can come up with relics that most of us won't find in an entire year!? ;D LOL!

May ebay be praised!? ;D

Glad to see you back in fine style, Free. That little statue thingy kind of didn't get it nearly as well as the CLASSIC Free picture.

Your entitiled to your choices, just like detector machines. You're still cool in our eyes. :-*

Sounds like everyone has had a few drinks today...where's mine.
Hi Zeb. Substantial depth gain no but an extra inch or two on bad ground is well worth having.
With the Minelab Musketeer in my area no gain by setting the ground balance (it has a fixed/adjustable switch for those that don't know the machine). Its the only machine I can say that of and its not down to the factory accidently setting the fixed dead on what my ground needs because its hilly ground like a layer cake with varying mineralisation.
With the old Lazer (British version Tesoro similar to the Bandido) a larger size coil (think it was 10 or 11 inch) compared to an 8 inch gave LESS in ground depth than the small coil. A ground balance mod meant in ground depth increased by an inch + so the real gain over the smaller loop was an inch.

That's about what I figured. By reading some posts you'd get the idea the difference between an adjustable ground balance and a factory set GB is having a detector and not having one.

Another thing one should take into account is the fact that to be an advantage over set GB, the person opporating the adjustable GB needs to know what he's doing and he must remember to keep doing it.

I read one review where the guy said he was constantly having to re-adjust his ground balance in order to hunt medium soil.

Oh well, I think it's all kind of a Karma thing--knowwhatImean?

Sometimes that extra inch or two is the difference between a $1000 gold nugget (or more) and a long, lonely walk home. Some types of detecting are not so depth dependent, others, like prospecting or beach hunting, require every last millimetre of depth. That's one reason I'm so depth obsessed. ...Willy.
