Garrett Master Hunter CX/12" high energy hothead. R.I.P (1991-2013)
Got my AtPro today in the mail. was a little surprised at how small the search coil looked to me,,,,I had a 12" Hothead on my MHCX but I guess the 8x11DD design is techy enough to be superior. Like all things I didn't bother to read the manual, until I needed to find the battery compartment. LOL would have never guessed how to remove that!!! Pretty simple in design. on thing I didn't like was the way the cord screwed into the housing. Yes Garrett has their own connection design, but it is a little awkward trying to screw the locking ring down, let alone align the pins,,,likewise the headset is also connects the same way and is equally annoying. I wonder when magnetic connections will make their debut.. My deep fryer has it, so simple so easy. So i see there are several modes, both in Pro and Std, goofed around with a few and personally Pro mode seems more functional.
All the wasteful air tests showed me one thing,,,8-10" was the norm for coins, and a few good beeps at 12" for a 25 gram Silver piece. My gold ring surprised me out to 14" no problem, just tells me this is more sensitive to gold than it is Silver, oddly, A whole bag of coins didn't go much beyond 14"
I threw a curve at this detector by laying an Iron Spike next to a Silver Half, it didn't like that, but I still have to play with the settings some more to see if it can work that type of magic. I noticed that this detector likes faster swings of the coil as slow swings at same height won't see it. And like always, a beer can at 18" rings a nice loud signal, but the better part of me knows that if it appears big when sweeping the coil around, its probably junk...I dug it anyways. Tomorrow I head off to a little Red Schoolhouse I hunted a dozen times,,, found a few wheaties and a couple Mercs, and a 1902 Officer of the Coast Artillery pin, (crossed cannons) unusual but a good sign of maybe more to come.. We will see...
