I got a AT Pro a about a year and a half ago. I was always a Whites fan, but I finally decided I hadn't had a new detector in MANY years and choose the Garret AT Pro. I had a learning curve, but I truly don't believe it has ever worked correctly since I bought it. I cannot seem to completely be able to ground balance it no matter what. It always has noise. I have tried to change frequencies, sensitivity, everything to make it better. I have watched the training videos, and a dozen and one videos on YouTube to no avail. The folks on their always get silence out of their machines. I went to SC, but that was a another story. It was even more chatter. So is it me being really stupid or is their something wrong here? I am calling Garret tommorow. Any suggestions would be great. I have found some items, but not to the extent I thought I would. Pinpointing is very difficult as well. Info?

I had one bad out of the box once upon a time ago. There was an issue in the coil. I'd call Garrett. I think its still under warranty.

Yeah, I mean I know I have a learning curve, but good grief!

Ok so I took the AT PRO back out. I tried to return it to the original settings, but it didn't want to reset at first. So I took out the batteries, reconnected the coil, turned it back on. Three attempts later I finally got it to reset. I think I finally have it ground balanced. Out in the yard, which is half frozen and full of buried iron, can slaw and Lord knows what else, it seemed to run. It still seems to emit noise with brisk movements or when it doinks a clump of grass. So... My experts out there, does this seem normal? Think I got it? Not sure why it needed so many attempts at resetting.

Do you have the coil cord wrapped tight? If not and it is moving down next to the coil that may be your problem.
I had a bad coil as well. I could turn the machine on and with the coil up in the air turn my wrist from right to left and it would sound off. It was almost like there was a metal marble inside the coil that was rolling back and forth as I moved. I called Garrett and they sent me a new coil and the problem was solved.

Yeah I wrapped it tight. It seems to be behaving itself right now. When I went back and figured it out, I unfortunately have had my detector longer than I thought. It's out of warranty, Soo... Hopefully it will be okay!

Salty, I recommend calling Garrett, they have great customer service warranty or not. I would look at a couple of things. 1. is the coil connector connected all the way? (The screw can be a bit tricky) 2. check the coil cable for any nicks hard dings. (As with any other type of cable, movement can cause the shielded cabling to become separated. Any cuts and dings can separate it or allow moisture in.) The At-Pro is a more sensitive machine, conduct air tests using a nickle and the standard coil in pro mode. (This will give some idea if its a coil cable issue)
I know many who had their machine's serviced from Garrett after warranties ran out with amazing customer service.
Good luck!
