Hi Fellow AT-Pro fans..

I will be spending a week at the beach and was wondering if those that use an AT-Pro on beach sand and/or shallow salt water has any tips they would be willing to share ?

I have used the AT Pro in normal parks for the past 2 years and such but never on the beach.

Thanks in advance.

I read that there is too much chatter with the pro due to the salt water. I have a pro and decided to purchase a Tesoro Sand Shark for our two weeks at Cocoa Beach. Did not find any treasure but found everything else!!!

Great machine on the dry sand, suffers badly in the wet sand and water, where you need to drop your Sensitivity to around 3, to stop the chattering and falsing. NOT a saltwater machine, but good luck! :skullflag:

As stated above the AT Pro does chatter a lot in wet sand and saltwater but dropping the sensitivity down helps. Mine works good in dry sand with the sensitivity up full, the one thing I have found that helps if you have a coil cover take it off, seems the saltwater and sand gets in between the coil and the cover and cause's chatter. Good luck hope you find a lot of great stuff.

You can manually ground balance it between 0-20 in the salt. It can chatter, but I test it in the water by placing a coin in the water. Good signals break through the chatter fine for me.

You will dramatically lose depth in the wet sand. When I had my ATP I ground balanced frequently between dry sand, high tide line and then again in wet sand. Seems like I remember the gb at 13 or so. Sensitivity 4 bars from right in wet sand.

Time is the only thing you never get back.. Why waste it on a machine that isn't up to the task. But if that's all you got, go for it. :laughing7:

Could not have said it better myself! I read everything I could find on PI (pulse induction) detectors and it paid off. Love the Sand Shark as the learning curve is minimal. However, get ready to dig as it finds everything!

Some guys have done fairly well with the AT Pro in salt water. Once set up properly, with a DD coil, it will find targets. Yes....there are single frequency detectors out there that do work in salt water. Often, it's the equipment choice and how the user sets it up. Because of the salt, you will not get the same depth as hunting on land, however, you will get the fresh drops, which includes coins and jewelry. Below is a link to tips for water hunting.

i only hunt salt water beaches although i also have a pi and a cz 21 i use my at pro about 80% of the time .A few things will help you out one is stay in pro mode that way the falsing will become a gentle murmur also you will have to slow down your swing speed almost minelab slow ,once you hit a target the trick is to rapidly dig and throw your sand up slope then rescan your sand and you should have your target .the reason you do this is as soon as the hole refills with water it will false when you swing over it ,that is the main problem people struggle with even a hole that doesnt fill back up with water you will hear unless you slope the angle of side walls of the hole once you figure that out it makes it much easier.one last thing keeyour coil level with the sand and dont scrub

Here in Jensen Beach and Miami you will need to manually ground balance to 12 or 13 to get the best results.

more good info.. thanks again.

I only get to the beach a few times a year and don't get a lot of MD time when I'm there. If I lived closer I would get a more capable machine for the beach. Since 98% of my MD time is in fry fields, the AT-Pro does well for me. Maybe when I retire, I'll be able to justify a beach machine.. Appreciate the help.
