It's a 10-yen coin. (google search)

Actual diameter: 2.35 cm
Composition: Bronze
Design: Evergreen Tree and
Uji Byodo-in Hoo-do Temple
(a famous temple in Kyoto)
The pine (matsu) is a divine tree representing constancy, vitality and longevity. Pine branches are an important part of the kadomatsu decoration in family homes during the New Year celebration.

On the "10" side it says "Heisei Ni Nen" (hay-E-say knee nen) or the second year of the Heisei era. That's 1990 on the western calendar.

That's a neat find. Brings back memories. Those 10 Yen pieces used to work in the Quarter slot machines on the Navy base at Atsugi, Japan. At the time they were only worth 1/36 of a dollar. Probably worth a lot more than that now. LOL
