Hi everyone,
I have just purchased and started detecting with an AT Gold and have a couple questions. I started working last night at our family home which was built in 1901. The detector is all over the place to say the least. I start in all metal mode with almost full sensitivity, iron discrim of 20-30 and 8 to 15 threshold. There is so much metal in the ground it is going crazy, I switch to the other disks and still it bounces everywhere. I ground balance frequently also. I dug a few pieces and mostly old iron junk came up. I had good signals that I just knew were coins but they turned out to be a part of a matchbox car in one case and a strip of some sort of soft metal in another. How can I best work this yard without digging up every square inch? Set up hints? Is there a different set up to look for rings as opposed to coins?
I have watched all the videos for the AT Gold but really didn't expect to run into this much trash. I am guessing the yard was leveled at some point and being a farm there is tons of crap lying around.

thank you for your time.

First off, you can see how sensitive the AT Gold is to small targets. I too was a bit overwhelmed at first when I was in a trashy area. When running wide open I counted almost twenty targets in one sweep! I would raise the iron discrimination up to 35 or even all the way up to 44 at first just so you can filter out most of the trash until you get more comfortable with it. Also, threshold seems way too high. I use 1 and sometimes 0 threshold (when in DISC 1). Also if the trash level is too high for you, work in DISC 1 or even DISC 2, but it is better if you go find a cleaner place to learn (highly recommended). Some place you can use All Metal. Look for targets that a small (narrow) in size and faint tone and don't rely too much on the ID #. You are just going to have to dig some targets until you get the feel of it.

Best advice I can give you is get out of the trashy places till you learn it a bit. Look for the cleanest ground you can find and listen to the difference in good and bad targets. Listen, not look at the screen. Audio is ALWAYS king.

Trashy areas are THE hardest places to detect. Much experience is needed for them. Once you get a handle on it then try it again. Will make your learning curve much more manageable.

Hi! In my opinion just switch the treshhold off in disc mode - you don't need this really.
Happy hunting.
