No you don't have a defective detector. Gold readings on the AT have no real cut off or start up readings as a lot depends on how the nugget is orientated to the coil or its shape. this goes for coins too. Things aren't cut and dried when you look at the meters. All meters are like this and behave this way.
 

The newer machines all have this now. I think the idea is to eliminate foil if it is a problem.

Out again this morning with the AT Gold. I ground balanced in all metal. Took the iron disc down to about 35. I like the ease of changing back and forth on the different modes to check the target. I will never be out gold prospecting with this machine, just not in that kind of area. I love the Pro so much that I wanted to try this machine as well. They say its a great machine around old home sites. I am sure I will learn to like the "gold" as much as I do the "pro". Thanks for the info and advice! : )
