Dug at a colonial to present day working farm.

At first I thought it was going to clean up to be a partial padlock.

But now I see the two rings are permanently attached, and its not quite looking like a lock.

Any idea as to its purpose and of course, age?

If you look at the last pics, I began to see how this could be some type of rope grab, where you apply pressure to one loop and it pinches the rope or strap that you ran through it.
