At first I thought it was a ring - but it's not.

I thought I had found a smashed ring when I first saw it in the dirt. But after cleaning it up I realized it wasn't a ring. I don't have a clue what it is. Does anyone know what this neat looking object is?

My first thought too but I can't see anything on the face of it. It'll be interesting to see what this turns out to be, nice find

thats ok, plenty of blanks out there, they became more of a fashion item around the neck rather than useful.

What was the seal for? Just decoration?

In your second picture and around the rim it looks like 5 or so spots that kinda look like settings for small jem stones. Probably not in real examination but if it were that would at least put it in the jewelry catagory.

To begin with they were for making wax impressions. Yours has either lost its base or its blank. I have seen a few blank ones & the one above is a simple cross-hatch, these types were fashionable & used like jewelry around the neck.

It could be pre-Victorian. :icon_thumright:

A lot of the "Sears Catalogue" era ones were plain, or engraved but not in reverse.
