Very Nice! The crystals are shaped like garnets but look black in the pictures. Are they black or a very dark red?

A buddy of mine gave me a bunch of fossils, rocks and native items his father found about 50 years ago.He was collecting mostly in ohio, indiana, kentucky and Illinois. He didn't mark this so were not sure exactly where it came from.It looks pretty cool.Is it worth anything?

Looks like it could be black tourmaline to me, it's hard to tell from a picture but that' my guess. HH

Sure, it has value as a mineral specimen. It depends how rare that type of specimen is, or where it originated, clarity and color of the garnets, etc. You might check out ebay, mineral specimens, garnets in schist.

Its a very cool rock. That would defiantly start conversations sitting on a living room shelf.

Garnets are a large family of silicate stones. The red version is Pyrope.Thers almandine. Both very pretty. Usually the more color the more value. I've been where there were so many of the darker reds that there was interest in mining them for sand paper. You may have seen garnet paper. Color is important for value.

I agree that its garnet in a shist, if you take a bright LED light up next to the crystals may reveal a true color
