Decided to stop at an older looking house in town today as we saw the owner outside mowing. He said he just sold the house but hasnt sold the papers yet and let us detect. He said it was built in the 1880's, which is very old for our area.
We both hit it real hard for about to hours, me with me AT pro and my buddy with his BH. For the first two hours we dug nothing but memorial pennies, a couple of hot wheels and a little trash. It was hard to detect from the constant iron noise. I tought my detector messed up so I reset it several times and ground balanced several time but I could find a single spot without an iron signal to use. Ended up having to go to the next lot and finally got a spot to ground balance. Didnt help though. It was just loaded with old nails and iron. I like to run wide open with iron audio on, but it was driving me nuts today.
We took a break for some water and decided to get back at it, there HAD to be an old coin somehwere. Went around the far side of the house and got a decent hit but was still choppy with iron. Dug down and found a rusty nail, hit the hole again and got a clearer signal. 5" deep under a big root, theis popped out. I actually thought it was a pull tab at first it was so crusted. I wiped it and noticed gold shiny corners. And, judging by the weight it wasnt plated but real gold! Couldnt tell much about it other than there was a setting for a stone on top which was missing. We spent ten minutes sifting through the dirt trying to find the stone but no luck.
After getting it home, I washed it off and it was still crusted. Had to hit it with the wire wheel to get the crust off. Finally, I was able to see the floral design and on the inside it says 18K. It must have been down there a long time to have been so heavily crusted up. Its got the spot for the big stone on top and three smaller stone beside that but all the stones are missing.
It weighs in at 5grams which puts the value at $155 making this the most valuable thing I have found so far! I had found a tiny thin gold ring a few years ago which was my top $ find until now.
Im really stoked about finding this, but still suprised we didnt hit old coins. My buddy did end up with a single 1929 wheat penny.
So, dont be afraid to stop and ask for permission when you see an old house!
Sorry the pics suck, left my camera in my buddies truck and took these with the ipad.
