Hello all, I am new at treasure hunting as well as forums, so Please excuse me if I do not post the correct wording, etc. Anyhow I had purchased the Garrett GTI-2500 for myself as well as two of the Garrett Ace-250 models for my two daughter's and my wife to use. I had seen an ad some time ago in the local newspaper that shown a person whom had metal detectors that he would rent out. I thought that is was a great idea, but I would also be very wary about renting out to a complete stranger.

I would just like to ask anyone here if they would do this, and if so what would you ask in terms of collateral to make sure of the return of the detector. I would also believe that the person whom is renting such a machine should need to sign a agreement that they will return it in the same condition as rented. I would not allow the GTI to be rented, but since we have two of the Ace-250 models, I have been considering doing this in the near future.

Anyway, Please let me know what you all think of doing something such as this and if you would ever "trust" someone unknown to use your metal detector? That is the main concern that I have is that it would come back broken or not at all.

Thanks Much, John Beekley

I don't think you would have people knocking down your front door wanting to rent a metal detector, they can be purchased for very little now days.

Also, who would actually rent a detector? Maybe someone who lost a very valuable ring or knew the exact location of a buried cache of coins? I guess it wouldn't hurt to try though - you never know about people! By the time you paid for your business license, printed contracts, etc, you'd probably end up in the red. What would happen if they did rent a detector and accidently broke it? What if they cut their finger on a digger you rented them? Anyways, it takes a lot of time to learn a detector and to rent one for a day or so is like renting an ipod for a day.....why bother?

Why not just loan them out for free and possibly get some more people involved in the hobby ;D.

Just my opinion.....HH/NS

Detectors aren't cheap Nightstalker.... people aren't going to go out and buy one to look for a ring they lost in their yard. Now if they did they likely would dig nothing but junk so I agree there but the question is detector/money

Hey man..... if you learn to use your detector well you might post on some local bulletin boards an offer to search at an hourly rate. I think renting would result in more grief than cash.

jbeekley, I would never rent out my machine to anybody, especially not to a stranger. I mean, do you rent out your own computer? Or TV?
Once you and your womenfolk get the treasure fever you won't be around the house long enough to answer the door/phone. Nope, use those babies yourselves and enjoy your time together. Much more important than what little money you might occassionally make on rentals. You could find much more clad coinage with them with regular personal use than you'd probably ever make in renting them out.

Besides, how are you going to get collateral from somebody? Ask to get a credit card slip like the car rental companies do? Ain't gonna happen. Get a cash deposit? Ain't gonna happen. Remember when video rental stores used to ask for a cash deposit before letting the video leave the store? That didn't last long because too many people got ticked off over it. Nope, use the dang machines every week and you'll be money ahead. Guaranteed!!!

First off,Welcome to the Treasurenet Forum! This is a very informative place with many good people on here.I gotta agree with alot of the replies already on here.Unless you live right on the beach or already have a business or something right on the beach, your not gonne do too well with renting 1 or 2 metal detectors.I would loan them to someone I knew for free, if they wanted to go hunting (detecting) with me.I would also offer the use of it to a stranger,if they had a place to detect on private property and I was invited to go with them.I would offer my services for finding a specific lost object in a specific area, probably for free, if I wasn't busy and it wasn't too far from me.If it was far and I was busy then I would have to charge a small fee for gas and time lost.Unless of course, this person owned a historic area of interest that was on private property (C.W. battlefield etc.) and he offered me full access to the place for future hunting in writing! :o One can dream can't he! ;D Anyway, you may be able to generate a little extra money by offering to find lost objects for people for a fee. Also, you may be able to generate access to private properties by offering the use of one of your extra detectors to the owner/s of said properties. But I doubt your gonna have much success renting out a single unit or two to strangers without much headache and aggravation. So,if you have someone that you don't know that wants to use one of your detectors, tell them "No problem let's go,where are we going hunting today?" ;) Good luck and H.H. :)
