asking for permission to hunt*update*

Re: asking for permission to hunt

I've never asked permission before (I'm too chicken :P) But I've heard the easiest way to do it is in letter form.

Re: asking for permission to hunt

NO NO NO.... it may be the easiest way, but it will be treated like junk mail! Heck, I probably would say no to a letter. The very best way is to go to the door and knock. Tell them exactly what you want to do and ask for permission! Be very up front and don't try to hide your action or finds! And abide by any guidelines that the property ower establishes. After seeing how you conduct yourself, he may even point you to other property owners in the area. ;)

Re: asking for permission to hunt

After talking to you on the chat, which was nice. I recommend spots where top soil is removed if possible. The chances of any damage done is very limited and it would be hard for the property owner to say no. Remember the first places you think of are normally the first places everyone else has been. Stay in touch when your detector arrives.

Re: asking for permission to hunt

The BEST way Is to Wait Till You See the Owner Outside Doing Yard Work, Or Working Anything OUTSIDE.

When A stranger Knocks at My Door I answer, HOWEVER, If I get Any Kind of Hint Their Selling Themselves Or Something Else, INCLUDING Door to Door Jahovas, I Get Rid of them FAST.

The ONLY exception Are Travelers In Need Of HELP. "Phone, Meal, Bathroom, Gas"

When I am Approached OUTSIDE , I am Much More Receptive Otherwise.

TRUST ME, People Don't Like to Be Pested With NON EMERGENCIES when Indoors.

Once I approach Someone, The FIRST thing I do Is SAY "HI" and Tell them Who I am.

Then I tell Them What I like to Do , in a Very Friendly, UP, Manner.

Then I ask How Old Their Place Is,
OR if I already Know the History," I'll Say DO YOU KNOW...."

And Once The Conversation Gets HEATED, I bring Up "WHY I ASKED"

It WORKS .

Re: asking for permission to hunt

Very well put Jeff. I would have trouble getting a dying man in the desert to try my ice water! I am just a little impatient, as it could be years before I catch the owner outside at some of the places that I want to hunt. I just go to the door and basically do the same thing you do. I introduce myself and let them know right up front that I am not selling anything and why I am there. Tell them about what I like to do and then ask if they would mind if I had a look around and before they can answer I usually ask them to go with me... to show me around. It works wonders if you can get them involved. Even if they say no, I usually ask if they know of any place that might be worth looking. Maybe I just have that nice guy look, because it has worked almost every time! People appreciate honesty! :)

Re: asking for permission to hunt

Bring a few of your better finds along to show people and get them excited about letting you search. Also, explain that you like old things, history, etc. , so the message is not just "I'm looking to take $ from your yard."

Re: asking for permission to hunt

Maybe some of your first to ask can be friends and family members. Then you would have some yes answers to build confidence in approaching others.

Re: asking for permission to hunt

Catching them out side is the way to go.Just don't sneak up on them ,make sure they see you walking up.HH

I just recently posted a list of things to do for one of our younger members. I think most of you are on the right track. One thing all property owners fear in this day and age is having a stranger on their property, especially when they are not at home. I personally don't like anyone on my property when I am not around, even relatives....no, especially relatives! So, when seeking permissiion, direct the conversation to having them name a time or day when it would be most convenient for you to hunt their property. If they balk, have a date or time in mind such as, after school or on Saturday morning, etc. Don't take for granted that when permission is granted it means forever! Tell them how long you expect to take to work their property and check in and out when you go there so they will be aware you are there. If several days pass between visits, be sure to reconfirm your permission to trespass. When you do have permission to hunt, save back a few items you find to show to them and get them more interested. Get them interested and get them talking and you can find out a wealth of information that will be helpful down lthe road. Always be respectful, heavy on the Ma'ams and Sirs and treat their property better than you would your own. And please, please don't show up to ask permission with a big shovel and a pickaxe dressed in your digging clothes! I'm sure my lucky blue prospecting shirt is pretty spiffy but it might turn some folks off! When you're finished ask if you can use them for a reference for seeking permission at other sites. I ask direct face to face and stop by farm fields when I see the farmer working it. I'm in Germany and speak fairly good German, being American somehow gives me an edge. Sometimes I have shown finds from another field and they help with conversation a bit as well, probably not a good idea to show your best finds, just the average stuff. HH, Mike
