It's a Chinese "cash coin". Here's one of sseveral sites with an identification guide (there may be a better one), where you match up the symbols: Identify your Chinese coins - Page 1

Awesome. Thanks so much for that site Benz. I'll clean it up a bit more and see if I can match it up.
Happy New Year. :occasion18:

Thanks Doug :hello: I have dug a few and surprised at how old some are, and more so at the low values and lack of appreciation by most people. Best wishes for the new year !!!

Herbie,
Thanks my friend. With all the relics you find you probably have a jar full of these.
Wishing you all the best in 2014.

I do have a couple Jars full of them, and yes they are very under rated.....most date to the 1600's(the 1850's ones are actually fairly rare)and even thogh most are not worth a whole lot......some are.I have two that are $100 coins,so it pays to research

Nice find! I have several Chinese Cash coins in my collection. I'll have to check them out on the web site.

Yes there seem to be more older ones than newer, the most commonly found up here are Chien Lungs, US Colonial period, determining face value and mint still elude me. Happy New Year Everyone :hello:

These Chinese cash coins that turn up with prevalence in North America, predominantly date from the Ch'ing or (Qing) Dynasty period 1644-1911.

While it is true this dynasty spanning nearly 300 years, dates back to the 1600's; a close look at the actual reign title depicted on these particular cash coins found in North American sites, will reveal most of these coins are dating to the 18th and 19th Centuries. :)

Thanks for the replies and info gang. Very interesting.
At least it's worth more than a washer, which is what I first thought it was. :laughing7:
Good luck this year,
Doug
