Can anyone fill me in on what an aseptic sponge is and what the age of this lid might be? Thanks!
Hello asmerri,
It's part of a container for surgical sponges, circa 1895. See here>>> Notes and Abstracts - Here, too >>> Red Cross Notes -
"a compressed disc of aseptic cotton that swells when moistened; used in packing cavities." definition of Bernays sponge in the Medical dictionary

I think they were and are used in hospitals starting way back in the 1850s maybe even some sort of farming for some sort of sterilize use but it does have too do with sterilize use and can be used for many other bio-waste purposes.. are you digging any hospital or farming related stuff?
That thing looks old enough that there probably aren't dangerous pathogens still hanging around. Still, I'd be careful. Have you researched the history of the site? Gloves might indeed be a wise precaution.
There are hundreds of old vacant lots like this one in this town. How do you go about researching what use to exist on a vacant lot?
