Ew ew ewww.

Biowaste. Wash those hands before you do anything.

Suggest you wear gloves if you continue at that site.

Aseptic = Sterile.

That thing looks old enough that there probably aren't dangerous pathogens still hanging around. Still, I'd be careful. Have you researched the history of the site? Gloves might indeed be a wise precaution.

I think they were and are used in hospitals starting way back in the 1850s maybe even some sort of farming for some sort of sterilize use but it does have too do with sterilize use and can be used for many other bio-waste purposes.. are you digging any hospital or farming related stuff?

An aseptic sponge in the medical field is basically a piece of sterile absorbent material, e.g. a piece of sterile gauze.

Very interesting. No I haven't found any other medical or vet related items at this site. People's responses to this find have me kinda freaked! I haven't researched the site. It's one of hundreds of old vacant lots in this town. How do you go about finding information regarding what use to be on a vacant lot?

There are hundreds of old vacant lots like this one in this town. How do you go about researching what use to exist on a vacant lot?

Go to your local Library and see if they have any old maps of the city/town.

You may also be able to find old maps of your city/town at the town hall, and or county seat.

You may also be able to find an old map online, it will takes little searching to find it using key words in a web search.

Hello again, asmerri,

My learned friend HSD may have thrown out a date prior to the debut of these sponges. Aseptic anything was a complete unknown in 1850.

Go to your local library and look up the Sanborn maps for your town. They can be a very enlightening tool.
