I obtained this from a Virginia family that found it (along with a bayonet) under the front porch of their house. The shell weighs just under 10 pounds and is missing the fuse. The grape shot that is visable in the shell is iron and not lead. My questions are:

1. What type of shell is it?
2. Because the fuse in missing, is it inert or does it need more attention?

I think I know what it is (maybe a parrott or a read), but I would like to hear your opinions. Thanks!

I can't help with an id for you but I can say that having no fuse and having been exposed to the elements I'd call it safe. I would imagine that any powder charge in it will have degraded over the years, but there's always a chance that some of it survived deep inside the shell. If you're worried about it you can wet it down and carefully pick away at the inside with a wooden or plastic skewer, or chop stick and clear everything out.

Never found one yet myself, but I think that's a Parrot shell. Shouldn't really need any attention to render it inert. With the fuse missing and having been exposed to moisture for so long it's as dead as it needs to be. Nice CW piece, could use some electrolysis and a good coat of wax or something to protect the surface from deterioration.
