I have been on some kind of treasurenet binge these last couple days. So many interesting topics and great information. I got gold fever and I dont even have a metal detector, YET :) So far Im thinking about starting off with a Ace250, not exactly sure why, but it seems like a good unit, Bang + Buck = Good Purchase? You guys seem like really good folks, and I hope I can contribute to the community. I was doing some research on spanish galleons that have been "recorded" to have sunk off the coasts around here and down to florida, seems like a lot of this spanish loot is still scattered around the ocean floor around these wrecks. God, I would kill to go on some kind of expedition in the keys. WHAT A THRILL THAT WOULD BE! Ok, back to reality, im just looking forward to finding some decent jewelery at the local beach, and maybe a few hotties, hehe. My buddy has an old WWII metal detector he is going to "try" and fix up to play with. That otta be interesting. Course, knowing our luck his first find is going to be some kind of unreleased ordinance. LMAO. Any ways, Im Chris, and Im pleased to meet everyone.

Time to get my feet wet.

Welcome! Sounds like the ACE 250 is the "bang for buck" choice these days. I've only seen them on the internet, but have recommended it to a friend starting out. I started with a White's MXT a few months ago and love it. Hope you live in a warm climate so you don't have to wait to jump in. My season is over already!

If ther b berried treasure, I b wearing a jacket and gloves. ;D

Its still pretty nice. Starting to get a little chilli.

Pirate,

welcome.

Good luck with whatever machine you decide on, hope to start seeing your finds in the future.

Chris, welcome to TreasureNet and the wonderful world of shipwreck hunting. These Forums have a reputation as the most informative and user friendly forums anyplace on the net.
Since you are now living near the beach, and have expressed an interest in shipwrecks and beach detecting, I would like to make a recommendation to you concerning metal detectors. Visit our friends at KellyCo.com, and the shipwreck Forum sponsors and find yourself a good underwater detector. You will be glad you did later on.

Happy Hunting

I would recommend a machine made for water hunting/salt water beach since the salt can make some detectors go crazy. Also when I detected the outer banks with my DFX, I was constantly worried about dropping it in the water.

That Ace 250 is a great machine, I haven't heard anything bad about it, just great reviews. Perfect for the beginer and I'm considering buying one just because of the great reviews on it. I use a White's XLT. The Ace 250 can be purchased for around $200.00 and it has 3 coils, small, medium and large, it comes with a medium and the other two are sold separately. I know if you buy it here http://www.billsdetectorsales.com/ , you will get free batteries, a free digging tool and free shipping for $200.00. I would also get headphones for the unit. HH, Mike

Pirate, welcome to the forum and to a great hobby ! The guys and girls on this forum have a lot of metal detecting knowledge, so you can learn a lot here. No matter what detector you choose, the main thing is to have fun ! Looking forward to your future posts. Good Luck !

Thanks for the info guys. I was leaning towards the Ace because I heard somewhere in here that you can submerge the coil and not do any damage to it. Plus, my price range is below 400, and I would prefer to stay below 300. But who knows, the line of work I'm in can be sporadicly rewarding. Maybe ill have the money to "invest" in a nice whites underwater unit. I am a decent swimmer, so that wouldn't be a problem. Why would an underwater unit be better compared to something that is not. I thought most jewelry people lost was on the dry part of the beach. Although, Ive lost so many sunglasses in the water I don't care to mention how many, perhaps the extra price is worth it. Just thinking out loud.

RRR!

I forgot to mention,

In regards to the habits of captains back in the 1600's and up, Is there any rule of thumb about searching inlets and bays? Did they even venture near or into these types of areas. I was thinking about this one area pretty close to me that would be fun to search, but I don't want to if its a waist of time.

Welcome pirate.I dont have much experience at the beach but.Think logically ,how many people have jumped in the ocean forgetting to take off their jewelry. Then they get beat by the waves and lose it.Just my 2 cents.Good luck and HH.

Hey, Pirate.? I recommended a water detector because the jewelry I found was in the water or at the water's edge.? Sometimes it gets tricky trying to dig, sift and hold your detector out of the water. ( I think amost detectors are waterproof up to the box.)

Maybe there's some more seasoned beach hunters who could help you out.? I only spent a week at the beach!!

GGGRRR AARRRGGGHHH! ahoy mate and welcome to ye fellow hunters forum.... excuse me..... pirate in me got loose. anyway welcome to the forum im new here aswell and i have tottally gotten hooked!!
