I have never tried to work coral, but I really doubt it would have concoidal chippping like that. Could be made of anything from quartz, agate, chert , flint or jasper. Almost looks like what I call "sweetwater agate" that we find in No. Colorado and around Wyoming. Any of these can be translucent, easily.

Nice. Hard to tell, but it looks huge compared with the fingers.

based on size in relation to your fingers in the second pic, it looks to be a spear head :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

Hello, I forgot to mention the size is just shy of 4". Any idea on the name of this point or age? Thanks for the help

Stephen

Hello great find by the way as far as names it mostly depends on the area were it was found. I am from New York and we call points of that shape Adena

Went metal detecting today and found this will digging a piece of copper. Any idea what this point is or value? I believe it is coral as it is translucent

I was of the impression that coral was in the orange to red color range and is solid and not translucent! Possibly what you found is made from quartz.

They used to find some agate filled coral pieces off the Fla coast (Ft. Lauderdale??) that had a lot of color, and as I remember, a lot of banding. Smilodon: other than being translucent, are there other reasons you think this may be agatized coral?
