My father passed away in March and has a large collection of arrowheads that we would like to get an appraisal on. I remember several of them when we hunted when I was a kid. I found a complete pipe with the holes at both ends started but never finished. Also I was about 3yrs old and we were hunting in the winter time and I was throwing every rock I found at my dad to check. One hit him in the back of his hand and he was about to spank me when he looked down and saw that I threw him a granite axe. He hunted with professional wrestler Bulldog Bob Brown a few times as he would come up to hunt with my dad. He has so many it would be too much to list. We are looking for someone who can give us an appraisal as to what we have. The collection is in northeast Kansas. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Take a look at similar examples of each specimen you have go for on eBay. When I look for something like what I found, I search the state I found it, as many for sale are listed by the particular state to which they were found. In your case I would search Native-American-artifact-Kansas, then click on completed sales. I myself really never assess a value on the artifacts I've personally found, because I don't sell them, but I will give one away to maybe a young kid who demonstrates a real curiosity and interest in them and asks questions on how they could be successful in finding them.

Obviously you can do what you like with them but from reading your post my guess would be the memories attached to them would be worth more than whatever money you might be able to get for them might want to consider just hanging on to them my two cents

Sorry about your loss. Hunting rocks with my father is a fond memory I have.

Appraisals can be tricky depending on what you need them for. Insurance is one thing, info and value for a donation or tax purposes is another, dividing an estate, etc.

I've seen estates pay $5 an artifact for an appraisal and record of hundreds of individual artifacts that aren't worth $5 a piece. (I think the guy wanted to keep the relic collection after his parents died, and the sister managed to force such a high valuation that she got everything else.)

The easiest type is just "I want to know if anything is really significant", and for that you could post some pictures here. It won't give you a valid appraisal, but that might help you figure out if you really need a formal appraisal.

Like joshuaream said....post a few good photos of the collection and the old pros here can tell you....'is there anything really significant here'....and you might get a 'send more photos of This piece or That piece...' type response.

Sorry about losing your Father you got lucky you didnt gey spanked with the axe lol Good luck

As others have stated, a few pictures for us and we could help you get an idea.

If you are on Facebook look up Jim Bennett. He is very trustworthy and very good at appraisals. He will auction them for you if that is your wish.

no price is worth the memories ... never sell.

I wound up selling my collection this year. It consisted of 36 18X12 frames. I contacted several dealers and sent them photos of my collection and received fairly low ball offers due to the fact that they were dealers. I then looked up prices on E Bay and several other artifact sites to get an indication of what they were worth.
Starting in January this year I attended and rented tables at every artifact show that was taking place in Texas. The cost per table averaged $20.00 per table. Some of the better grade artifacts I sold individually and most all the field grade artifacts I sold by the frame. I was able sell all of my collection and get what I expected to get in just 5 shows. I also had a lot of fun doing it that way.

thanks everyone. I will for sure pull out the ones that have sentimental value to me. Still a lot to go thru. I may try to get a few pics and post
