I think BCH nailed it. :icon_thumright: If you google 5 magnet Telephone Magneto, you will get a lot of hits, and many of them have the same patent number. Here's a link with a bit of info;

The light was definitely added later, and probably for the reason Jeff suggested, science lab or project.
