The Arkies have done us a big favour by damaging the growing crop of our local farmers. This is in readyness for a major new road, so the more we can save the better.

The first field was a small one with about 6 trenches back-filled & it didn't take us long to complete.

Very pleased with the early Naval Button
Plus a nice late medieval Lead Button - very crude looking :)
2 Scrappies
bits..........

Second field we only had time to do 1.5 trenches until the weather closed on us. We detect in rain but never lightning, not wise with pockets full of iron & a metal detector & spade.

At least this showed some potential, its the first time we tried this land & Dad got a rare hammered, for us. Our first Groat (4 pence) of Lizy, very early issue (2nd Issue), only a few years after she was crowned.

Elizabeth I
1560-61
Groat
ELIZABETH D G ANG FR ET HI REGINA
No rose behind bust

No date above shield
POSVI DEV ADIVTOREM MEV
2nd Issue
Mint Mark Marlet

Now we have land at the hardest possible time of year - thank-you my Arkie friends :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright: :headbang:

We used to hunt for months to find 1 or 2, in the early years, it took even longer. Now we seem to be a relatively common find :headbang: Never get bored of hammered silver, much nicer than Roman bronzes. :hello:

Very nice. Love it. Congrats.....

Great finds Cru! Love the Groat.
I'm thinking of also getting one of those JCBs - to help with the digging ;D
Hoping to get out this afternoon for a few hours.

As always great finds Crusader :hello2:

Good one on the digging idea DavidBeard ;D Maybe Shaun7 knows how to operate one of those machines :laughing7:

Good luck hunting. I'll also try to get a few hours of hunting today :icon_thumright:

Nice hammered Cru-dad :headbang: are you sure it's a Groat and not a Shilling :read2: looks a bit large for Groat, or is it just the pictures :icon_scratch: a Shilling would be 33mm, Groat 23mm, hope it is a Shilling :o :o

Very nice work Crusader! Saving history before it gets paved over by a new road.

Sweet finds!

At first it was the size of a sixpence, but the new rose & date types in the third issue. The groats in the 1-2nd issue were larger flans. So its a large groat which is the same size of a later sixpence :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright: Confused me for a while as my spink book has no picture of a early Lizzy Groat.

Nice finds Cru, its nice that the arkies help you out every once in a while, especially in the summer!

Nice finds Crusader! That Naval button is a beauty!

Ah crop circles. I see the mother ship, it looks yellow.... Nice finds!!

Congrats on the nice finds and I do enjoy all those scrappy's!! Congrats to your Dad on his hammered!!

That's the way it is with Good Finds. Once one realizes how they should be hunting, and where they should be hunting, it makes a big improvement in finds. Location and Technique are the most important, and you are on Fire over there. We never get bored of Seated Silver or Large Cents over here. ;D

Best Wishes,

Buckles
