Turquoise is not supposed to be east of Santa Fe NM, but
down in Polk Co AR, somebody failed to tell Mother Nature.
I first heard about it years ago, when i read a magazine
article. And after searching for several years, (& getting many
strange looks), when you asked someone about Turq.
I finally met some folks that helped me narrow it down, It
seems it was mined by a man from Texas, who had heard about
it from his lawyer out in Tuscon, (Gem & Mineral show).
They mined for several years, (lease on National Forest), he
then took everything back to Texas, (barrells of turq), & didn't
do anything for several years.
After a venture in nv, mining for Silver, he returned to Texas,
& retreived his Turq, & bought a place in AR.
I had looked for several years for the man, finally decided that
he was dead, & gave up.
One of his former workers gave me samples, & another man
gave me the beads, (they were sent to NM for stabilizing).
When the April issue of (Rock & Gem) hit the stands, there
was his story about the Mining venture, & beautiful pic's of all
his collection. I was the first customer through the door, he lives
in a very remote area, & is now pursuing "Gold Mining".
I bought the two biggest nuggets in the following pic, & asked
how much for all of it? He replied one & a half million, so I went
home with my nuggets, drooling all the way.
The mine has now been reclaimed I understand, but he is looking for a backer on another one, (any takers?), if so, I can
get you in touch with him.

The Turquoise outcrop is on top of Big Porter Mountain. It is located in a wild life refuge and the only means of mining is pick and shovel. I worked the summer of 1981 working for the claim order.

Hello! I am a fierce rockhounding and taking my first trip to Arkansas to the crystal mines. I have stumbled across the TURQUOISE in my research in mines of the Jessieville, AR. area and one place is a big area of interest to me. The company is... AVANT MINING, the owner and President of the company is James Zigras. He is a collector and owned 20 Arkansas mines respectively. Other mines of Tourquoise distribution are as follows: Mona Lisa Mine, Porter Ridge Mine, McBride Mine, Blue Bird Mine, and Newton Mine.

James Zigras' Avant Mining (501)984-4165. May or may not be active.

And I just learned from watching Jeopardy the other night that the word
Turquoise comes from a reference to the country Turkey.
Who says ya can't learn anything from tv?
