Is there any way to determine what kind of wood?. First one 8.5 inches x 4 inches.
Second, 6 inches x 4 inches.

There's a place here in Colorado with big tree stumps bigger than most trees in Colorado today and they were once giant Redwood trees that were covered in volcanic ash and grew back in a time of a cooler wetter environment unlike today in are warming arid climate. https://www.nps.gov/flfo/index.htm
I find fragments of petrified wood out back of where I lived that were dug up from the many coal mines this area once had. Not a pretty variety, but still interesting to think about and the time they grew green and what that time was like.

Nice piece and beautiful colors. We enjoy walking creeks down here and finding it. I have a large black and white piece that my wife is wanting carved out into a small sink. We’ll see how that goes…
