I was a member when we had our club in Lexington. Part of everyone's club dues went to their membership in FMDAC and the rest went to a monthly newsletter/reminder that we mailed out a week before our next scheduled meeting.

Jeff,

I would join if I believed they would do me some good locally.

Although I am a Member, I actually Don't know what they
do on the local levels, except where local clubs are concerned.

they do get involved at the state and National level.

Like the NRA there is strength in numbers,
but also disdain by the minorities.

If the FMDAC actions at the State and National level ultimately
indirectly help me at the local level, I am all for it.

I am thinking of a local grass roots type plan here for local MD guys....

Time will tell.

if you go to their link & look on the left
you will see what Legislation they are aware of,
& working on.

I don't think you need to be a member to use their site,
or submit info on new legislation enacted or pending.

Local level clubs, I am sure do help.
especially if the members show they are civic minded.
attend Town meetings, & keep their temper, while
trying to change things.

& being able to Show they have the Backing
at a National Level May also help.

I remember when they were first formed (mid 1980s?) our club got a sample newsletter. So we joined and started getting the mailers, etc... That was first ANY of us had heard about any legal problems, off-limits places, etc... It was quite an eye-opener, since, to us...... no one here had ever had any reason to think that parks, beaches, schools, etc.... weren't anything but "open". But ironically, instead of thinking of those articles as far away & isolated incidents, some people, based on these reported incidents, began to wonder "gee, I wonder if I'm allowed in such & such parks?", and began to ask. Whereas before, it never occured to us you needed to ask to hunt parks. Funny thing was, that some of the places they now got "no's" from, were places we'd been hunting, unbothered, for years!

So I think that while the cause is noble, it's had a funny effect of getting some folks afraid ..... as if .... "oh my gosh, I might be doing something ilegal?" and then they start asking and petitioning, in places that no one ever cared or noticed us before. And then it just becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy, that you/we bring attention to ourselves, and then, bureaucrats, who's image is of geeks with shovels, start passing out even more "no's" and regulations. But like I say, this is no fault of FMDAC, it's just an unfortunate & strange by-product.

No local chapter in Nebraska. I might be interested to join if there was.

Yes, I currently am. I believe there are alot of bogus pieces of legislation that we as treasure hunters may never know about without the fmdac. They're at least looking into some and trying to protect our rights. It's a small price to pay in the long run.
