I bought a box of misc items at an estate sale today. It had 3 silver platters. A magnet stuck to one so I know it's not real silver. The smaller one pictured with the legs under it is very tarnished on the underside. It's engraved Norma Hines Youth Teacher 1957-1971. The bigger serving tray is engraved Happy 25th Anniversary Mom and Dad 1976. This one does have the makers mark on the back. It says Trade mark 18 *Picture of a crown* 83 F.B. Rogers Silver Co. That's the only markings I can find on either one. Someone said to spit on it, and cover it with aluminium foil and if it smells like rotten eggs than it's silver... How do I know if it's real or fake? Also any idea on the value of these? Thanks for all the help!

From the info you gave and what I see doesn't look and sound like being solid silver to me. I've herd of Frenches Mustard and it must be Frenches Mustard can be used to test silver, but what you described with the aluminum foil and all, I've never herd of that method to test silver. Good looking platters!

Unless antique coin silver or the like, which these are not, any serving tray of this size/magnitude would be marked appropriately. So, the answer is no, these are plated, especially the Rogers piece. Sorry.

F.B.Rogers would have marked the tray as to silver content.

Most of the platters are silver plated brass.
