I would guess repros. How many do you have? It's pretty rare to find even one, so I would be suspicious if there were more than one or two of them.

He doesn't know who, where or when they were found, only that he was told they were found and authentic. There are only two, The top three pictures are front and back of one, the last three pictures are the front and back of the second one.

Thank you for the information but I can't tell the difference, I'm sure it will take a trained eye. I was hoping for an "ah ha" one way or the other. If anybody knows an authority in the Mountain State I would take them for verification?

found by someone with a detector tells me there is a good chance they are real.
definitely a better chance then if they were found at a swap meet or in a drawer

I think the giveaway is the number "12" on the back. I saw reproduction Revolutionary War USA buttons on eBay a couple of months ago and they all had numbers stamped on the back. I don't think the originals had numbers stamped on the back. Just my opinion ...

Spot on freebird- no British Rev War button's that I've dug/seen have ever had numbers on the back...unless the previous owner scratched it in. Also if they are pewter, they are missing the scissor mold seem on the reverse.

Thank you for all the feedback I really appreciate the help. The numbers on the back are what made me suspicious in the first place.
