Are these nails old? Plus a possible broken horse shoe?

Went out with my son today on our property where I believe there was an old barn at one time and there are a lot of large granite stones that were split by hand. We found one spot that was no more than 5x5' were we found almost a dozen square nails. We also found what could be a piece of a horse shoe or maybe some kind of door hinge or something. There was a string of old barbwire too. Is there anyway to find out how old these nails are? And does anyone have any clue what the broken piece of iron is?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the info. I can only imagine what else is out there and I'm looking forward to what I might be able to find. There was definitely a lot of activity here and there is even a really old cemetery on the property that dates back the early 1800's with 2 or 3 gravestones I'm going to check out. Of course I won't be digging in cemetery but I'm going to check to see if there is anything around it.

thought I'd jump in here as my question is similar on the topic....

I am hunting an old farmsite that goes back to early 1800's and finding lots of farm trash. Broken plow blades, barbed wire, etc... Something I keep finding is broken "horse" shoes. I've found about 6 so far, and not a single one that wasn't broken in half.

Is that common or does it signify anything?
