These are two buttons from a pouch full that I found many years ago on private land. They appeared to be someones collection that was tossed away maybe. I probably had enough of these similar looking brass buttons to complete a uniform before giving them away to friends and relatives. I kept what I thought were the best ones. I believe they are Civil War Union. Can anyone tell me if this is correct and the dates these were used.

Hmmmn, I spent a bit of time staring at the backmarks on your photo and something just tells me later than CW rather than in the 1860-70 range. I have to look at some of mine, which I might do, but have to open up a display case to do so. What gives me the unsure answer of whether CW era or not is the way the backsides are dimpled, it appears more modern than the CW buttons I have seen. Could be wrong, that particular Scovill backmark is so common, and there does not appear to be any dots or lines going around any of the backmark, making dating harder still.

If I find a more definitive answer I surely will chime in again.
UPDATE of this post:
UPON FURTHER REVIEW, I will say: 1860-1870 :)

Nice buttons either way for display...

Hi found the one on the right but nowhere near as nice as yours. It is in my Alberts button book and is a US Navy button. Mine was found at the same spot that I found Civil War eagle buttons so I'm guessing the button is 1860's-1870's. Just my two cents worth :)

I found them in a pouch with other CW items originally. I seen it on CW websites IDed as US Navy but there are many varieties. Both buttons are exactly the same just different size. Yes, they are in excellent cond. I hope to soon find the rest of them. (I forgot where I hid them).
