Going to recommend a read and the book is
not out yet :P

Came across this fellow John Pendlebury somewhere
in my past, and have looked into his life.

He was an archaeologist who worked in Greece,
Egypt, and Crete; by all accounts he was very good
at his job. With WWII approaching he offered his
services for his country; because of his knowledge of
Crete. He was appointed as Vice-Consul on Crete,
but his job really being to organize a resistance.
He was killed in the German invasion; Hitler would never
use paratroopers again, because of the hard time they
had on Crete.

Strange fellow, one eye, roamed the hills of Crete with
a sword cane. The locals accepted him as one of their
own. Should be an interesting read.

" The Rash Adventurer: A Life of John Pendlebury "
by Imogen Grundon, Patrick Leigh Fermor.

Should be out early next year. Amazon is accepting orders
now.

have a good un.........

Sounds like a great read, Sherm!

For a very different little book about one family's idyllic, rustic, and often lunatic life on Crete in prewar days, try Gerald Durrell's My Family and Other Animals. It's a great personal favorite of mine, and I heartily envy anyone the experience of reading it for the first time.
