Archaeology Volunteers Needed in the French Quarter January 4-15th
Public Event · By Delta Chapter Archaeology

When:

Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at 8:00am until Sunday, January 15, 2012 at 5:00pm

Where:

In the French Quarter at the site of the new Irish Cultural Museum of New Orleans

Description:

We are seeking hardy volunteers to assist with an archaeological excavation in the French Quarter at the site of the new Irish Cultural Museum of New Orleans. This location was the home to a host of individuals over the last 230 years including a Free Woman of Color and Irish and Italian immigrants. The field work will involve shovel testing and unit excavation along with lots of screening of soil. This is an opportunity to participate in the scientific process of archaeology which will explore the lives of the site’s former residents.

When: January 4-15th
If you are interested in volunteering, please respond via email ([email protected]) and provide the days you are available and your contact information.

We are trying to provide an opportunity to everyone interested as well as make sure we have enough crew for each day. I will be back in touch with you after December 28th to confirm the days you are scheduled.

Things to consider before agreeing volunteering:

• Please commit for a least a half day (full day preferred).
• You must be of high-school age or older.
• Working hours are 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.
• The work is outside (as long as there is not heavy rain). It could be really cold and windy or sunny and warm.
• Before volunteering, a waiver of liability must be signed.
• Parking is scarce in the French Quarter. If you drive to the site, you will likely have to pay for parking (around $6 a day). Alternate forms of transportation are encouraged.

Working on the Sat 7th - Monday 9th: Due the BSC National Championship Game, it is expected that traffic in the quarter will be heavy on those days. Parking might be difficult and parking rates might be extremely high. Please keep this in mind when making a commitment to volunteer.

Should you have any questions, please contact me via email or at 280-6492.

Thank You,
Andrea

I'll pass for a couple of reasons. #1 A friend of mines uncle is an arch. My friend told me his uncles house is filled with relics etc. So that kind of tells me that i'll be working to put relics in the archs pockets or to decorate his house, let him dig his own if that may be the case. #2 Having to pay to volunteer = paying for the privilege of working for nothing. Boy that sounds fair doesnt it :laughing9:

OMgosh....what an opportunity!!! It sounds like a lot of fun! I just live in the wrong state!! :dontknow:

There are two important rules to remember

#1 Spartacus53 doesn't work for free
#2 Spartacus53 doesn't work...

If they need someone to boss people around, have them give me a call anytime  :laughing7:

While it's tempting to get one's name mentioned as an "archeology assistant" in a footnote of a new chapter in the long continuing series "The History of Brothels in New Orleans", I think I'll pass.... :laughing7:

Sounds like detecting most of the time. :laughing9:

But it's different when we work for ourselves, on our terms, and keep what we find.

Thats the, thing we get to keep what we find. Also if you should find something important at that dig,you wouldnt get the credit for the find. Metal detecting you would.

Men & women getting paid while using free labor. :laughing7: What a racket! I gotta get me some that action! :laughing7:

That just shows what archies think about us 'Great Unwashed'. Peons.

If I ever volunteered to do any type of volunteer work at all, I would volunteer to do some cool digging somewhere. Of course, this is under the premise that I understood the meaning of volunteer work. The cool thing about volunteer work is that you can actually have a say whether or not you may in fact do the volunteer work. Cool....
