I originally posted this in the Indian Artifacts forum but that doesn't mean it's "Indian"...I've taken it to our Center for History and they don't really know but added that it *could* be a lead paint stir. A good friend of mine (a retired asst. dean at Notre Dame) was intrigued by it but he doesn't have a clue, except to say, "yeah, it's definitely stone and NOT Geofact."

If additional pics are needed I'll belly up to that plate when I get home from work.

I found it in Northern Indiana...not by water..inland.

Thanks!

Re: Anyone willing to give it a whirl?

Looks strange to me. Like someone flattened the one side, doesn't look natural at all.
Almost as if it was used to grind on something else which made the one side flat... ???

Wish I could get my hands on it and look at it through a magnifying glass.

Like Big C, my first though was rib...

Have anyplace you can take it to get it looked at?

Re: Anyone willing to give it a whirl?

Well the search for an answer continues. :icon_scratch:

I'll try to post pics of all sides (earliest will be Sunday evening).

Yes, BOTH sides are flat..smooth and the other sides are kinda rounded...NOT geofact that's for sure.

I'm thinking of taking it to Notre Dame Univ. next week, BUT before I do I'm sending a pic to a geologist at IUSB...today. i'll definitely keep ya posted!

Hey anyone in Cleveland???...I'll be hanging there for the weekend and will tote the mystery thang along.

Re: Anyone willing to give it a whirl?

I'm sorry, but to me that looks like part of a deer antler. If you look at post #8, it's a classic example, just from the pics, of course, what with the hard shell and porous center. But then if you look at that along with the striations, well, that would have to be my guess. For it to be stone, do a simple scratch test and determine the hardness of the piece and see if it matches any in your area as far as color and texure. The other pics posted here are the general shape, but don't match as far as I can see. Let us know what you find out.

Maybe from a mastodon?
Please reference the latest pic of the small end...
Mastodon - meaning nipple tooth. From the Greek, mastos and odont...? ;D

Re: Anyone willing to give it a whirl?

Believe it or not, but that appears to be half of a type of sharpening stone.
I have found them on farm sites before-- sorry I can't show you one as I don't believe I've kept any! They seem to be almost like a very hard, white, unglazed ceramic.
Feel free to dis-agree tho! :D

Maybe...the color is right.
Why the pointed shape? Is it worn?

Re: Anyone willing to give it a whirl?

I did a quick search on FurTrade's idea and I found that sharpening stones do come in this shape.
I like the idea. Put a little oil on the stone and try to sharpen a knife. :)

Re: Anyone willing to give it a whirl?

I believe it was made for a specialized job? Just can't remember.
An old farmer told me about it. I do know the other end was shaped the same as this end.

You are my hero as this piece looks and feels like hard, unglazed ceramic! Ive got to oil it up and sharpen a knife, just for kicks.

Since you don't keep them...and if it IS a sharpener...they hold no value, right?

Vibes, They are kind of an interesting artifact & I have seen them before at Flea Markets-----but I don't believe they have any real value.

PS: Glad I could help!

Good to see the mystery is solved at last ;D

I'm sure someone mentioned the possibility of a sharpening stone way back but there's nothing like proper authentication. Well done Ia.Furtrade

Cool bigcy, I was too lazy to scroll back through and see who it was ;D

I wonder if the rounded end was used for sharpening the curved blades of sickles and scythes?

It seems it would suit the purpose.

Mike, It does run in my mind that they were for sharpening big scythes & the smaller ones you illustrated.
