Anyone know what this says?

This isn't a cheap dime store ring. It is heavy, and has been sized. This meant something to someone once.

I honestly don't know which way is up, so I have it both ways to make it easier.

give us the back story...very interesting ring. it is either Arabic or Persian...the top image is correct i believe and it should be read from right to left.

Not much of a back story. My wife's dad was an antique collector. He passed away and we found this in his ridiculously large and varied collection. He had everything from ancient roman coins to art deco medals, modern firearms to gumball charms, gold krugerrands to world war 1 posters.

most of these inscriptions are very common Islamic sayings or prayers and can be readily identified even by 8 year olds. I know this as I have seen kids do this for me before.

I got a reply from that craigslist post.
Most likely it is:

Taj al-Sham تاج الشام

TRANSLATION:

The Crown Of Al-sham, where Al-sham = Syrian and Lebanese lands

I couldn't find the phrase "The Crown Of Al-sham" online, so after thinking the person two or three times I told him or her that and asked why someone would wear a ring with that phrase.

I absolutely love using craiglists for doing research. It's free and it's neat to be able to post messages all over the world.

So I heard back from my middle eastern pen pal again, who happens to be a doctor.

His last message...

I have consulted others, including my wife, who studied art and Islamic drawing, and I was wrong in my earlier assumption!
You have 3 words in Arabic written in a Turkish or Kofi style, the first word in the top is Allah الله
The second word to the right side is الحمد means praise or appreciation , the third word is لله means for Allah.
(Praise be to Allah)
I am totally convinced with this result. Regarding how old is that ring? Not sure! But most likely 200 years.
It is usual until now for men to have rings with similar written.

A two hundred year old ring! That's cool.

Now, to put a price on it...
