Yes... I too occasionally need some help on I.D's etc... :P

Any help / knowledge on this rare samurai wakizashi would help.
May even have been a "polearm" at one time... not sure.

Thanks in advance.

Oriental items are not my strongpoint... Especially the language.
My eyes begin to play tricks on me. :)

Writing meaning / what it says... AND a value is the target here.

Hey ARRC -
Cant wait to hear what you find out about this!

My observations:
Picture #6:
Crudely made with file marks visible.
The hole was drilled after the characters were put on which seems unusual.
I would take it to a Japanese/Chinese restaurant and have them read it for you.

This is very interesting.
Thanks Gary from Oregon

Dang AARC,,,
You really come across some cool stuff.
The "sword" shown could be either wakizashi sword, as well as the short tanto.
Hard to really tell the length with no size reference shown.
I do see a "temperline" (aka HAMON) on the edge (HA) but it doesn't seem as defined as on the "folded" (Damascus styled) metal ones I have seen.
As you said you really need someone that can read the inscriptions on the scabbard (SAYA) as well as the blade and tang (NAKAGO) inscriptions.
I will really follow this thread,,, this stuff is hella interesting to me.
THANK YOU for sharing AARC

Well just to throw this out there...
I can tell you that I do know SOME things about these sorst of things...

First... you must realize... many of these are VERY... VERY old... 16th and 17th century... and they look like this.

These are very hard to pinpoint... BUT with this said... 90 % of the time... the story is right in front of you IN those marks.

MAny wakizashi were polearms prior.

I have seen a lot of the WW2 swords that were hundreds of years old and refitted with modern grips for officers, but I never learned enough about them to even know how much I don't know.

This forum might be the place to go though The Japanese Sword Forum ? Index page they have a translation section... Keep us posted, I'd be interested in what you may find out...

Well... I think one side says...

"Man who run behind truck...

Gets exhausted".

I think on the handle is inscribed the great wisdom that reads "man with hole in pocket feels cocky."

Hey AARC,

You might try an online JPG-to-Text Translator.
i2OCR - Free Online Japanese OCR

You'll probably have to sketch your own JPG text, as I doubt a JPG translator could read the text as-is (black text on dark brown, sometimes shiny background).
Probably not enough contrast, plus the letters are pretty wide.

I was on vacation once and decided I would translate for the group a tourist-type roadside plaque that was 100% in Japanese.
So, I just made up a story on the fly, as if I were actually translating the text.
Note: I don't speak, read or write any Japanese!

I don't think my traveling companions ever caught on?

Actually, I have researched it and it says, "Man who goes to bed with itchy butt wakes up with stinky finger."
