Pepper,

Looks like the top of a lipstick tube to me.

I think RR got it right. I'd check with Avon

Looks rather large for lipstick tube.

What's the diameter?

A lipstick tube shouldn't have a hole on the end. I'd guess that it is the cap to a fountain pen. The hole is where the clasp would have been attached (soldered).

it may have been one of the lipstick tubes on a necklace. they were pretty popular.

Tony, it's about 5\8" in diameter. I appreciate all of you helping me try to ID it. I'll look up Avon and see if I can find anything about it there. Later I'll try to clean it up and post a picture of a side view. It's driving me nuts not knowing what it is. ;)

I agree that it might be a fountain pen cap. It's definitely not a shotgun shell though.

At about 5/8" in diameter it seems way to large for lipstick or fountain pen.

I'm thinking along the lines of a table or chair leg protector. Still looking.

I was wrong earlier, it is the cap to an antique fountain pen.
Possibly a Parker, or Gold dragon.
Hope this helped.

Thank you, Sniffer and everyone else who helped with the ID. I found some more old stuff today but I was so tired after the hunt I didn't take pictures.
