Hopefully I'm posting this in the correct place :)
Found this while metal detecting. It's not metallic just happened to see it on the ground here in NE Ohio. Only part of it was exposed and its appearance reminded me of polished wood or maybe the shell of a buckeye.
I had it sitting here at my desk and a coworker saw it and thought it was a piece of chocolate. I said "go ahead and take a bite".
It seems pretty dense. Feels heavier than it should be by size. It's about an inch long. Any ideas?

It looks like magnatite. Is it magnetic? Try a streak test on a piece of porcelin, let us know the results...red streak, black streak, brown streak, etc.

Not magnetic. Had to put quite a bit of pressure on it to leave a streak which was brown.

Ok, my guess is Staurolite

Could be. See if you can scratch it with a knife. Staurolite is pretty hard, the equivalent of Quartz and harder (7-7.5).

Yes, see if a knife will scratch it.

Staurolite streaks white/gray.

Pictures don't show well but the fracture appears to be Conchoidal. Staurolite is Sub-Conchoidal.

I've dug a lot of Staurolite twins at the Hondo deposit and I'm thinking isn't Staurolite.

I think it's a rock - not a mineral.
