...found this rock and on the back side are these tiny weird things growing on it. They're hard so not fungus, unless petrified...lol DSCN4014.JPGDSCN4013.JPGDSCN4008.JPG

Calcite or adularia would be my first guess. Try and see if it reacts with acid.

The last two I think are dolomite.

...well Eu, I don't have "acid" so can't do that. I'll look up the names you gave & check the pictures to see if they match....thank you for the site...:)

...thanks Brian...I'll go look it up and see how it compares mine...along with Eu's suggestions and post what I find.

More specifically saddle dolomite.

I think you've got it Brian! I looked at the pictures of the types you guys suggested and it does appear to be the "saddle dolomite"....thank you very much!!! And thank you also Turkish Man for replying, sometimes it's hard to guess when you don't have the thing "in hand", I'm grateful for your input guys...:)

You don't have vinegar or even citric acid? Both can usually be found in a food store.

Ok. A little mineralogy lesson. If you put vinegar on a carbonate like Limestone it will more than likely react. Dolomite is also a carbonate. But dolomite is a high magnesium calcite. It will more than likely not react with vinegar if you put it on the specimen. It might react with vinegar if the specimen is powdered. For dolomite to react with an acid, the specimen must have more surface area.

You are right Brian, the vinegar did not cause a reaction and thanks for the lesson!
