From looking at the comparison to the ruler it appears the bullet diameter is about 7/16", or About .437". That would make it fit into the .44/.45 caliber range. Ordinarily I would say it's a .45/70 bullet, except for the deep hollow in the base. That confuses me. It tells me the base is designed for quick expansion to fit the grooves and lands of the weapon it is fired in. The diameter is a little small for a .45/70, but I can't get an exact diameter from the picture. The round nose configuration also tells me it is not a newer design, say from before the 1970s? The newer designed bullets usually have a flattened nose for greater shocking power when striking the intended target. It looks to be almost 7/8" or .875" long which would make it a trifle long for a handgun bullet. Perhaps a .43 Egyptian? Or not! I wish I knew the weight of the bullet. Well, this is all I can deduce from the pictures so anything would just be a guess on my part unless the bullet were miked and weighed. Maybe someone else with bullet expertise can figure it out? I weighed it on a gram scale and it jumped back and forth from 11g to 12g's. The closest measurement I can say is 3/8's dia. and 11/16's long. I dont know if this any help or not. So this would not be a CW era bullet, but a newer muzzle loader round. Monty Thank you for the info. JYD.

Don't be too hasty. It could be a muzzle loader round as hollow bases were common in muzzle loading weapons. However, I don't think it is an old one because the grease groves are gnurled into the bullet instead of cast. Monty
