John Birch, and his sons terrorized Illinois during the 1840-1850s. Their cabin was 9 miles SW of Marshall. They robbed, stole and looted Illinois as well as neighboring states. They spent most of their time around Rock Island. A detective infiltrated the gang and provided proof to authorities. When the gang was rounded up for trial, the detective testified that large amounts of money were sealed in glass bottles with beeswax, and buried in a wheat field near Devils Creek. Most of the gang were hanged, the rest left Illinois never to be seen again. I t has never been reported found. Hope this is what you were looking for.
