A friend of mine found this detecting the yard of an 1800's house this past weekend and wanted me to see if I could find out anything about it for him. Do any of you recognize it? It's about the size of a US nickel and I'm assuming Chinese? Age and approximate value is what he's looking for. I doubt he'd ever sell it but he likes knowing the value of his finds. Thanks for any help and Happy Hunting.

Thanks for your help unclemac. I think I found the coin here.... http://www.anythinganywhere.com/commerce/coins/coinpics/chin-qing.htm 14th coin down. Jia Qing Tong Bao, 1796-1820 Seems to date to around 1815 to 1820 time period, which is a pretty cool find for Southeast Missouri. The site saw a lot of Civil War US troop activity so was probably dropped by a soldier who carried it from who knows where. Current value is probably closer to $5 or $10 unless he found the right person/right place/time scenario. Thanks for your help

JFYI,the majority found date to that time and earlier....dont think thats when they were dropped!!Hundreds and thousands are dug,in 1880's sites, that date to the 1600's.Cool find none the less, and yours is the real deal. Many that are found are novelty/craft reproductions.

Most of these type of coins came to the states as decorations on sewing baskets, etc. Once they were devalued they were used as decorative pieces and sold to the tourists.

That is not true at all............thousands of Chinese came here for the Calif Gold Rush, followed the rush's to various other places and then to build the Rail roads across the US.......with them they brought hundreds and thousands of these cash coins(100 was worth 1 cent here in 1855)On average we find 50-100 per year and I promise you not one was a basket decoration. How many baskets do you really think there are with Coins on them? The ones I have seen only had four or five....

I bought a lot of these at an antique store cheap and after countless hours of research I finally just gave up and threw them in a box. Ming,Qing,Ding,Zing,Bling Screw it!

i think he means like this...

yep Mac,we have actually dug em still strung...

The novelty ones are distinguishable...easily recognizable.....even the originals are not GENERALLY worth a whole lot....there a few very rare types...I have two that are $100 a piece..not bad.Yes,trying to id them makes my head ache...Hikeinmtns on here is awesome...I send him pics front and back and he id's them for me

I have dug a lot of them here in Iowa and am pretty sure we didn't have to many Chinese people here, I have saw fancy sewing baskets that have had over 20 coins sewn on to it. Just my 2 cents.

..well speak for Iowa then....not the rest of the US,because the Chinese were very instrumental in building the US into what it is today, and were all over! Also it is VERY easy to tell the Novelty(the types on baskets)from the real ones..I have honestly never dug a fake....out of hundreds I have dug...the one this post is about is an original
