Found this ring a few days back about 3 feet down while sifting an area I had noticed a lot of old glass and iron nails going about 3 feet down getting little brass surprises as I sifted for the glass but the ring is of no value its destroy and gem is broken but I'm interested in the history so if anyone has an idea I'd appreciate it very much to get your inputs

It just sucks the thing is in awful condition I thought it was just a piece of metal when found it only realized it was a ring when I cleaned it and saw the broken gem glitter no idea what the gem is either

That is a nice ring and I wouldn't clean it any more if I were you. It looks hand made and hand decorated. It is made from Bronze and I think I see some traces of Gilt on it. The stone looks like glass to me but could be maybe Amber. If it had been found in the UK or Europe I would date it roughly as early 17th Century but that is just a rough guess. I'd need to see it in person to be more definite. Nice find.

I found the ring right on the property I live on anything I find is on the property I live on or my neighbors right next to mine which I live in central California but the area I found the ring in seems to have a lot of stuff that doesn't seem to belong in the area I can only guess that maybe someone there some point in time collected antiques and something happened to whatever home stood in the area but that a guess could be wrong lol maybe letting my imagination run lol

This could be completely irrelevant but this was sifted out of the same area of the ring roughly same depth of the ring about 2 foot under it may not be related but who knows

I knew about the watch fob but the ring is still a mystery so many opinions on it for now its just a broken ring that I'm not going to mess with so I don't further destroy it lol

Been researching my area after a long time of researching discovered a old school house existed on the adjacent property to my family's it was apparently moved in 1910 but it had been long abandoned before it was moved going to get premission to hunt that area should be very interesting though since lame me doesn't drive and this property is at my mothers and I'm at my dads for two weeks the anticipation is going to kill me lol

Really the only way to date a ring that isn't marked by the maker is like most items. There are trends on how they where made. Look for little clues as is it hand made/engraved does the stone looked glued in or made into the ring, does it looked molded or hammered, things like that. I know at one point in America most common married couples used copper or bronze wedding and engagement rings as even back then most people couldn't afford gold or silver. I have also seen roman rings that look alot like yours so you gotta search for the smallest clues and start searching from there. Rings are tough to date, rings have been roughly the same since people been messing with metals. necklaces pins earrings things like that are much easier.

Okay thanks it looks well aged whatever is in it definitely isn't glued in whatever is in it was smashed and broke on close inspection looks hand made many small but faded details I'm just going to take advice of people and not further clean it and hold on to it as it is I don't even want to handle it much
