pic is too small to make it out, and give a detailed confirmation,

can you increase the size of the pic, or retake bigger & clearer pics?

It looks like it could be but, it's too hard to tell from those pics.

Don't know if these are any better, but .....

Judging from the design, and the letter style on the piece,

I'd say civilwar for sure but,

maybe someone else can confirm/back me up on this one- that has a little more experience with this sort of thing??

Cool find, and it looks like you're on the rgt track!

That's not really a letter 'S' (but it sure does look like it on the pic). That is just a round raised part that is on the rivets I have seen. The green patina just makes it look like a letter. I have found fired bullets and the belt in my sig a few miles away, but I think those were random lucky finds.

I've found the same rivets on battlefields. I'd say you're in the right place.

sure looks like it... do you think they're brass?

No idea. Does brass get a green patina to it ? It kind of looks like a rusty copper color where there is no green on it. No letters or numbers on it anywhere I can see.

Get some Brasso and shine one of them up... could be copper or brass, both were used...

I've actually heard of people still pulling them out of the grond with some bits of leather (albeit rotten) attached...

I've found several like that in the Richmond, Petersburg area where I was digging some nice civil war era relics. I think you are in the Ballpark.
