Anyone have a clue?

The following came from/around an old cellar hole that so far continually shows signs of being from the late 1700,s.

Can anyone ID any of these iron objects? And, with the nails, why so many different sizes?



This image below: there is a square nail sticking out of the large left one. All pieces seem to be of same shape.


Solid iron and rather heavy for its size.


Why so many different nail sizes for one structure?

The pieces you found could be parts to a plethora of cast iron items, so it will be next to impossible to say what they are. The 2 thinner pieces in the 1st pics could be part of a barrel strap. The thicker piece could be from a cast iron stove, but so many items were made of cast iron, it would be hard to determine. Enjoy, Breezie

Any nails made at that time would have had to be hand-forged so no two would be exactly alike, and I imagine that size would depend on how much iron you'd be working with for a particular batch.

I go along with the hand made = different length theory. Some look like what are known as CUT nails. Slightly tapered body with slight or no head. Since they are bent, they are old. Modern cut nails are casehardened. They break rather then bend.
As for the other parts, they are just scrap parts until you clean them up for possible ID.
