I have a similar one and mine is embossed Patent Mar.18, 1888, but I think yours might be older, say Civil War era or even pre-CW. To answer your original question: Anyone good with buckles? My answer is Buckles. Maybe he'll see your post and comment. Nice find, Breezie

Pretty good with buckles but still haven't mastered the one-handed-bra-clasp-unsnap

It was there, I saw it and had to take it :D

Breezie- Thanks for your reply. I HIGHLY doubt this is even close to cw era considering it was found in a small patch of woods on Chicago's north side, near the north branch of the Chicago river. As far as I'm aware, there was no CW activity of any kind in this area, and the north branch of the river/north shore channel hadn't even been built/dug yet....

Very strange raised fixing for the prong bar :icon_scratch: don't think this is a garment buckle(waist coat or corset) I think it's some kind of strap adjustment Buckle :dontknow: ...perhaps Horse Tack :D

Camp Douglas was in Chicago. It started out as a training camp for Union troops then was turned into a prison camp for Confederate POWs. It was worse than the famed Andersonville Prison in Georgia.

This is not a shoe buckle. I don't think it's a garment buckle (because it doesn't sit flush with whatever it was attached to due to the convex back). So I'm thinking horse-related. I haven't seen one like it, but I would imagine it is from the 2nd half of the 1800s due to the construction--perhaps even early 20th c.

Regards,

Buckles

agreed, the force that bent the pins adds weight to this being on a horse, circa 1900 I guess.
