anyone ever see a bullet like this?

I found this in the area of some late 1700s/early 1800s cellar holes...i know people have done a lot of hunting around here, but i'm not really sure when this bullet might be from. the base is just barely smaller in diameter than a dime.

I believe that it's called a Foster type slug...d2

It's designed to operate in regular smoothe bore shotguns. The idea is that the fins on the slug will impart a spin and stabilize the slug in flight for better accuracy. Good idea? Yes, but I have read reports that it doesn't work any better than a slick sided slug. That's why the newer slug guns will have rifling cut into the barrel, to impart spin. Monty
