It's up to you what you do..but in the future I'd pay half what they want an tell then right out that it's not that your saying there liars but it's you how you do things at yardsale cause you don't know if it works or not... If they plug it in an you se if works then I'd try 3/4 of there askin price...

A lady pulled some 'silver' jewelry aside and said 'It's all sterling'. Three pieces aren't even marked. I'm taking back the three pieces worth a total of $12.... It's on her head, not mine, to make it right....

I bought one of those small gas tillers for flower beds and tight places. I specially asked and the guy said it ran. After getting all sweaty after gasing it up and pulling on the starter rope until my arm hurt, I checked the spark plug's spark.... Dead as a Hammer. Then, I noticed a "Refurbished" sticker on the gearbox case and I knew it was more than just one person's tiller.... All in my wet and sweaty clothes, I took it back in person. He saw how I'd worked up a sweat and handed me my dollars back.

Entitled much?

I've had plenty people tell me something works when it doesn't . If it is high value electronic I test it on the spot. If it's not I lowball them just incase it's DOA.

You should know what you are buying. It's a garage sale not Walmart.

Never... Ever... Buy any powered item at a garage or estate sale without testing it. Just Sayin'.

I tested it and the power light came on. It just won't hold a charge. I wanted it for the house too. I may try ordering a new battery

Take the battery out, then press and hold the power button. Put the battery back in. Now fully charge it. Then repeat the process of removing the battery and pressing the power button and recharge it once more.

Then try running it. It will probably work.

Only once did I ever return something to a sale:

I bought a box of reel to reel tapes without really examining them. Got them home and realized they had the family's personal info on them. Recordings of musicals from the deceased father from a museum he ran. This was unique stuff that would be lost to history if not returned to the family.

I will admit that I looked up the generic value of the tapes and they were not worth too much more than what I paid. At that point, I got in my car and drove 30 mins back to the sale. I gave the tapes back to the owner and explained why. He was grateful and gave me my money back.

Thanks I will try that

I go on the assumption that "all sales are final" on garage sales or "buyer beware". Just because the silver jewelry isn't marked doesn't mean it isn't silver, do yourself a favor and take it to a jeweler first before you jump the gun and call the lady a liar and demand a refund. She may have been told it was silver when it was given to her or it may really be antique or designer silver (without a mark), besides you only paid 12 dollars for it.

Sadly people will tell you exactly what you want to hear to get your money, I've had them from all walks of life lie to me,yard sales are a great place to dupe people into buying broken stuff. Once I was lied to over a 3.00 item in front of my kid, when we got home my kid laughed at me and said dad you got ripped off wasted 3.00, I replied best 3.00 I ever spent as it was a Lesson for my son to learn about how people can be.

When I sell at yard Sales all deals are Final,
Even if I accidently sold something for a fraction if it's value
I wouldn't hold it against the person to make a killing off
my lack of Knowledge.
as Cojones Says a yard sale is not Walmart.

I was looking the irobot up online. It would be cheaper to buy a new battery then a new machine. So I'll try that first. For the silver, there is so much of it faked out there. I would return it at a flea market though if they were selling it as silver and it wasn't. Why not carry an acid kit in your car though. Or a magnet? Might help you out in the future.

a flea Market, at least around here, is a Different animal then a Yard sale.

some Flea Markets here are indoors, and the same sellers every weekend, So more like a Store
& I may consider returns at an indoor regular Flea market stand.
but outdoors no

Buyer beware. When it comes to garage/yard sales, it's an "as is, no returns accepted" policy for the most part. I've never returned anything and i've been burned more than once. Intentional? Maybe, maybe not but in the long run it was my fault for buying the item to begin with. If it plugs in test it before you buy. Granted, something that runs on a rechargeable battery is not really testable to the point you can tell if the battery is good. To that, treat it as if the battery is bad and needs replaced. Most of the time they are bad anyway. If it's supposed to be silver then you better know your silver. Never take someone's word for it. Someone may be trying to get over on you and someone may not actually know that it isn't silver. I had to explain to a woman last weekend about her silver puffy heart locket that she though was sterling. It was clearly marked Alpaca... not silver, sorry lady. Looks a lot like silver but it isn't. Pottery and glassware, thoroughly examine items for chips, cracks, repairs etc. in bright light if possible.

And yeah, if it's a flea market vendor that is a regular then depending on what it was I may consider a return on something.

To me all sales final...Buyer bears some responsibility to look the item over before buying.

I bought an IRobot with a bad battery once too. They said it worked, but just like yours it didn't hold a charge. I bought it for the house just like you. I got a "compatible" battery for cheap and everything was good after that.
If you just dragged a whole bunch of your stuff out in your yard, and you were sure a thing worked the last time you used it, how likely are you to say "it works now" and feel honest about it? Batteries go bad. I bet it's OK, otherwise.

I've always gone with the policy that with a garage/yard sale all sales are final. About the only time that I'd consider returning something is if it unknowingly had some major value to the seller (such as a file cabinet with personal documents, or something). Other than that, if its something broken or not as described, just swallow the loss and think of it as a lesson learned.

I returned at no cost a graduation book from a WWII Bomadier (?) school. Belonged to the sellers Grandfather and his Grandfather was one of the students in the book. I bought the book in a group of books. Seller did not know it was in the group.

I have a tester. With silver in 'free fall', I'm buying to at least break even or better, so $12 is $12..... When I took back the $12 worth in the 3 pieces she said were Sterling, the young lady was nice and realized they were not "officially" stamped and may not be Sterling. I didn't 'hit her over the head with the facts' that they weren't. Also, she saw the one $3 necklace and she said she had quickly bagged it up from her dresser had the ring catch damaged and was simply 'mashed closed' with pliers. We just exchanged for Sterling pieces that totaled up to $12. After settling up, I found a long Sterling necklace she had priced at $20. She came down to $15. Getting it home, it weighs 32.6 grams, so I did well enough on it. I've seen hateful garage sale sellers and buyers doing and saying awful things when they don't have all the facts or try to belittle the other person for sociopathic reasons, and it's a pain to just be around them.... Being honest and bringing out the best in people makes for a pleasant day and an enjoyable hobby.
