It looks like a rosette but we would have to know the size and see the back. Looks interesting.

It looks like the back may have been iron, not sure. It's made of thin brass. That's all I got for info.

It could be 50 years old or older but thin steel backs = fashion button.

Groundhogdd, if it really is a Confederate Engineers button (or any other version of Confederate or US military buttons), then please explain to us why it doesn't appear in ANY button-book which shows Confederate and/or US military buttons.

what i meant to say was its off a union coat.during the war the south had little supplys so it was not uncommon for a confed to sew replacement buttons on thier coats.

No way is this 19th C, I have seen several posted & I think the pattern is a common Waterbury type.
